Mukhtar Bibi Statement for US Congress
November 1, 2005
I am extremely thankful to the US congress for giving me the opportunity to speak to you. I am the voice of those Pakistani women who need you to stand behind them in their fight for justice. Most of you know my appalling story: the feudal lords used an illegal and non-religious local tribal council (panchayat) to violate my honor.
Instead of allowing them to succeed and achieve their goal, I have acquired a realistic, constructive attitude. I have to end oppression with education. I have raised a voice against oppression, and I have faced several obstacles. Myself, my friend Naseem Akhter, and my family fear for our life. There are efforts to suppress my voice at every level. The government of Pakistan tries to harass me using various means. Police officers who try to support me are pressurized and transferred out of the area.
In conclusion, I believe that there should be better laws to ensure the welfare of women, and their implementation must be guaranteed. There should be only one independent judicial system and the courts should be completely autonomous. Police performance should be improved and women's police stations should be built in the villages.
Sincerely,
Mukhtar Bibi |
