Pakistan : Violence Against Women.
Featuring Mukhtaran Bibi
Tuesday, November 1, 2005
4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Room: 2203 Rayburn
The Congressional Human Rights Caucus would like to invite you to attend a Members' briefing on issues of violence against women in Pakistan, featuring Mukhtaran Bibi, who was gang-raped on the orders of a village council. The briefing will be held on Tuesday, November 1, at 4:00 p.m. in room 2203 Rayburn HOB . The briefing is open to the public and the media.
On June 22, 2002, a village council of elders sentenced Mukhtaran Bibi to be gang-raped for the alleged misconduct of her brother. She was then forced to walk home naked in front of a crowd of onlookers. Instead of committing suicide out of shame, which is often the result of rapes in Pakistan, Mukhtaran Bibi became an outspoken advocate for women's rights and challenged the status quo of women in Pakistanby seeking justice. She testified against her perpetrators in court, and six men were convicted.
Since those convictions, Ms. Bibi has used her compensation money to start two elementary schools, to purchase a women's shelter, to convert a van into a local ambulance, and continues to speak out against honor killings and rapes of women. Despite great pressure upon her to remain silence, she is traveling abroad to publicize the plight of women in similar situations, and Ms. Bibi will receive Glamour Magazine's human rights award during her trip.
To discuss these important issues, we will welcome the following expert witnesses:
I. Panel:
Representative, U.S. Department of State (invited)
II. Panel:
Ms. Mukhtaran Bibi, Women's Rights Advocate
III. Panel:
T. Kumar, Amnesty International USA
Representative, Human Rights Watch (invited)
Dr. Amna Buttar, Asian-American Network Against Abuse of Human Rights (ANAA)
We look forward to seeing you at this important briefing. If you have any questions, please call Maryamu Aminu (Rep. Lantos) at x5-3531, Samantha Stockman (Rep. Wolf) at x5-5136 .
